A Resolution

Alright, about a week or so ago I deleted every post that was in this blog and changed the theme — it was just time to clean house.  So, I figure, what’s the best way to get it started back up again if not to get it going with the New Year and everyone’s favorite New Year topic: resolutions.

I’ll admit it: I normally don’t make resolutions.  I find that it’s just one more way to depress myself, because I know that no matter what I resolve to do, I’ll give up on it (or, more likely, forget about it) within a week or so.  Most of the time, I’d rather just not go through that in the first place.

This year’s a little different though, and I actually have a very simple resolution that I should be able to keep.  And I’ll start off with some common resolutions it most definitely is not:

  • Quitting smoking.  Anyone who knows me to any degree knows this is just a stupid idea to begin with.  Yeah, at some point in the year I may decide to quit, but I’m not going to make any promises.
  • Losing Weight.  Again, if you’ve ever met me in person, you’ll know this is not only stupid, but would be quite unhealthy.  I may be able to get by losing a single pound; any more than that and I’ll look anorexic.
  • Getting in Shape.  I probably should do this (especially considering the first item on here), but let’s be honest: it just ain’t happening.  I’m too lazy, and I get winded thinking about someone else playing chess.
  • Manage Money Better.  Again, this is probably something that would be a good idea, but again, it just ain’t gonna happen.  The missus might be able to do it for us, but I’m not going to make any promises about changing my spending habits.  If it happens, great; if not, well, life goes on.

Okay, so those are probably some of the more common resolutions people make.  Mine’s a little different, and one that a lot of people probably don’t ever worry about.

I resolve to still be with the same company I’m at right now when 2010 ends.

Now, before you get on about how that should just be implied in life, let me explain.

I’ve been working fairly consistently since I was about 19 or 20.  I’ve had a few breaks in that, but nothing drastic.  And, not counting the time I worked at my dad’s bar, I’ve never spent much more than a year at the same company.  Most of the time it was my own fault, I’ll admit; I kept thinking the company needed to adjust to me, to play by my rules, instead of the other way around.

This time, it’s different.  I’m at a great company (or, at least, a great department in a good company).  I like my coworkers, I like the job, and even though it’s pretty damned stressful most of the time, I’m a much different person than I used to be and I’m able to work with it most of the time.

So, for my first post in this cleaned-out-version of my blog, that’s my New Year’s resolution: to be sitting here on December 31st, 2010, griping about the same job I’m at today.

How about you — how did your resolutions from last year (if you had any) work out?  What are you resolving to do this year?
